General mouth care:
- Your dentures and your mouth should be cleaned after every meal, but this is not always practical, so twice daily cleanings should be done.
- Every morning and evening the dentures should be cleaned.
- Store bought cleaners are effective cleaning solutions (follow manufacturers directions for best results) or you can try a mild vinegar and water solution (two parts vinegar with four parts water) soak for 15 to 30 minutes maximum.
- Never aggressively brush the inside surface of the dentures. This will wear down the acrylic surface polishing it smooth and altering the fit. Simply rinse out the inside of the denture and if necessary only gently brush two remove any debris.
- Your mouth needs attention too. Using a soft bristle toothbrush, gently brush all gum areas including the roof of your mouth and tongue. You may also use toothpaste if desired.
- The brushing promotes blood flow, which is imperative to the health of the gum and the underlying bone.
- Failure to stimulate these areas can result in the softening of the gum and eventual loss of bone support.
- Any type of denture or appliance in your mouth requires regular check ups and professional cleanings to ensure proper fit and function.
